I have been a hobbyist drifter for quite sometime. Being a designer car aesthetics are huge to me. In drifting, style is the first and foremost of importance. This is what drew me to drifting. But as the discipline spread to other countries, new interpretations have taken it away from its origins.
A group of guys in Texas created a series to get back to the roots of drifting called Texas Street Legal or TXSL. Aaron Losey the organizer contacted me for some designs. He wanted something fun, and not too serious since that is what the aim was for the series.
- It all started with a banner design for TXSL.
- Skyprint Media in California handled the printing.
- Then they were distributed to the participants.
- The reaction to the banners was great. A throw back design with a nod to the original drift series D1GP.
- Pleased with the first design, Aaron asked for a flyer design for the years biggest event in Texas, Lone Star Drift. Again he wanted a fun image to capture the spirit of the event.
- I also provided him with a second…
- …and 3rd option. He was very pleased and used all three as he could not pick only one.
- This lead to a design for a lone star drift banner and sticker set. This image was one of the first drafts. Aaron wanted a lot of color and hype.
- This is the image we settled on. Again when he saw it he knew it was exactly what he wanted.
- Sky Print again printed out the flyers and the reception by the participants of the series was warm.
- The door cards which display the drivers names and entry numbers mimicked the banners for a complete theme.
- Sky Print Media handling all the printing needs.
- Photos popped up all over social media.
- Next up were the stickers. We wnated to have something that was simple but showed Texas pride.
- This idea came to me after I had finished the final draft. I was sleeping and woke up in the middle of the night chuckling about the idea. The character is from The Simpsons, a very popular show that is the longest running series in history. The character is called The Rich Texan. He is extremely outlandish and always firing his pistols in public.
- Aaron loved the idea so much we made a shirt out of it.
- A more simple idea which became the main sticker.
- Another design paying respect to the main tire sponsor Kenda.
- Hats were also produced in conjunction with the shirts.
The series is in full swing and a great success. Each entrants vehicle is plastered with these colorful designs. Many wear the apparel and most importantly Aaron Losey was a satisfied customer, one of the best feelings a designer can have.
